The Golden Cord by: Paul Genesse (1st in series)
A really good book! I really enjoyed it and recommend it to everybody!
Excerpt from The Golden Cord:
Drake pressed the blade against Blayne's throat and glanced at his two Drobin friends.
"Get to the woods."
"You'll follow?" Bellor asked with concern.
The young man nodded, wondering if the War Priest guessed his intentions.
Thor glared at the crossbowmen aiming at Drake, then put his thick fist against his chest and nodded at Drake before withdrawing. Bellow pulled on the dogs' collars. They whined and barked as Bellor dragged them across the drawbridge, then across the field into the forest. Drake glanced at the dead dogs in the tunnel and at the severed heads on the bridge. The men were killed because of him. There was no other truth. He could have let the Drobin die in the Thornclaw Forest. Instead he had brought them to Armstead, somehow triggering the attack.
The time had come. Drake stepped away from Blayne, giving the Armsteaders clear shots with their crossbows. He locked eyes with Elder Trevers and let his knife fall from his grasp. "My life for theirs."
The villagers took aim.
Drake's last regret was that he would never see Jaena again.
